Once you have a good amount of content on your blog – dont let all those quality posts go to waste, you should be trying to expose new readers to your best content. Just how do you go about it ? That’s the subject of this post, Im going to look at 5 techniques you can use with examples and recommended plugins.
1. TWEET OLD POSTS
Tweet Old Posts is a free plugin which I have just installed here on WPLift. It enables you to connect to your twitter account and then specify a time interval for the plugin to auto-tweet links to your old posts. You can choose which posts or categories to exclude from being posted (for example I excluded the news category). Some other options you are able to set are which url shortener to use, included hash tags, prefix for the tweets and minimum age for tweets to be posted.
2. RECOMMENDED POSTS
Creating a recommended posts area on your blog is a great way to direct new visitors to the best of your content, its also has SEO benefits as you are linking to your best posts. You could create this in your footer (like I do on WPLIft) or you could add an area to your sidebar and display it via a widget. A plugin to manage this for you is Must Read Posts – it adds a custom field to your posts which when added will display that post in a widget.
3. RELATED POSTS
When a reader has finished reading your post they have a choice of hitting the back button or reading something else from your site, by showing related posts at the end of your article you are offering them a next step to follow. For related posts to work well you should have a good head of content, I have held off from adding this yet on WPLift while I build more content as I dont have too many posts on similar subjects. If you wish to add this to your site, the Yet Another Related Posts Plugin is a good solid plugin to help you achieve this.
4. STRATEGIC INTERLINKING
When writing new posts and you come across a phrase or word related to an old post, take the time to link to it – it lets the reader know about your old content and also provides a boost for that post in the search engines. Try and link phrases that you want that post to rank for in the search engines, dont forget you can also link to categories, tags and archives. A plugin which can help do this for you is SEO Smart Links.
5. ROUNDUP OLD POSTS
I will collect together themes or plugins on a certain subject, but you dont have to link out to other people’s sites – you could do a roundup post of your own posts! This one again is for blogs with quite a few posts on similar subjects, for example on WPLift I could do a post which collects together all my theme posts or all the how-to posts. This is a good way to package together all your content on a subject for newer readers, you could even create an eBook out of your old posts and give it away as an incentive for signing up to your newsletter.
